Just Unknown These are the first stories of Balzac that I’ve read. The two in this volume presume a certain level of knowledge of the arts on the part of the reader; in the first story of painting and in the second of music. Not in-depth knowledge, but at least some. And the introductory material does help. Both are pretty good stories, but nothing fantastic.The Unknown Masterpiece starts out well enough but when the painting is finally revealed, the nothingness of it is rather anti-cliamactic. Clever maybe, but that’s it. The latter story, Gambara, has an interesting twist at the end (though one which seems rather unlikely), and contains some remarkable turns of phrase and interesting characters, but drags on about Gambara’s imagination and his phantastical musical scores.Neither story really left that much of an impression or left me with a lot to say about them. A Great Story-teller.
